We are committed to doing what is necessary, regardless of what is considered economically feasible. Our goal is to protect the planet, and uphold human rights, and fostering tribal stewardship of all wild lands and the flora and fauna found within them.
In 2011, Wolves lost federal protection across the Western USA by a congressional rider on a must-pass federal budget bill. Since then, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana have stripped away legal protections, killing more wolves and their young through trapping, snaring, running them down on snowmobiles, aerial gunning whole packs, and even raiding dens and paying lucrative state-sponsored bounties for dead wolves and their pups. Wolves outside of Yellowstone and other national parks are disappearing because they cannot sustain this level of persecution. Sadly, the parks alone are not large enough to sustain a viable regional wolf population. Wolves that leave the parks rarely survive.
Grizzly bears are protected under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) today, yet the federal government appears eager to deliver them to state management. Under ESA protection, grizzlies have made a comeback in the Western USA, but they are still one of the most vulnerable species in this region today.
The American Bison have long suffered under state control as the US Fish and Wildlife Service has repeatedly refused to list the species under ESA protection. Once numbering 30 to 60 million, bison roamed across the continent and played an essential role in sustaining healthy grassland ecosystems. Today, less than 6,000 bison survive in the Yellowstone ecosystem as America’s last wild herd, yet the states classify them as “livestock,” so they can slaughter them when they naturally migrate seeking forage outside the national park on our national forests.
This is tragically occurring across our federal public lands and national forests, lands that were meant to be managed for “The Public,” and the wildlife held in Trust for future generations. With the unprecedented biodiversity loss worldwide, we must stop this senseless killing and instead coexist with wildlife on our public lands.
